Ashwagandha is an important herb in the Ayurvedic medicine system. It is also known as Indian ginseng or winter cherry. The root of the herb has a distinctive odor that resembles horse sweat, giving it the name Ashwagandha. In the Ayurvedic textbook ‘Bhavaprakasha’, the properties of Ashwagandha are illustrated in
under shloka:

गन्धान्ता वाजिनामादिरश्वगन्धा हयाद्वया। वराहकर्णी वरदा बलदा कुष्ठगन्धिनी ||
अश्वगन्धाऽनिलश्लेष्मश्वित्रशोथक्षयापहा । बल्या रसायनी तिक्ता कपायोष्णाऽतिशुक्रला ॥ -भावप्रकाश

Ashwagandha benefits

Ashwagandha is an evergreen shrub that grows in India, the Middle East, and parts of Africa. It has a long history of use in traditional medicine. For hundreds of years, people have used the roots and orange-red fruit of ashwagandha for medicinal purposes. The herb is also known as Indian ginseng or winter cherry.

The name “ashwagandha” describes the smell of its root, which means “like a horse.” By definition, ashwa means horse. Practitioners use this herb as a general tonic to increase energy and reduce stress and anxiety. as well as help for certain types of cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and anxiety.

Benefits of Ashwagandha

1.Ashwagandha for Stress

Stress can usually be attributed to Vata dosha imbalance and often presents with irritability, insomnia, and fear. Taking Ashwagandha powder helps balance Vata and thus reduces symptoms of stress.
Tip:

  1. Take 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of Ashwagandha root powder and boil it in 2 cups of water.
  2. Add a pinch of ginger. Boil until reduced by half.
  3. Cool the mixture and add honey to enhance its flavor.
  4. Drink this tea to relax your mind.

 2.Ashwagandha for Anxiety

Ashwagandha can improve an individual’s ability to deal with stress and stress-related issues such as anxiety. Stress increases the secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which in turn increases cortisol levels (stress hormone) in the body. Ashwagandha powder reduces the level of cortisol and helps reduce stress and its associated problems like anxiety.

According to Ayurveda, anxiety is associated with aggravated Vata dosha, so one should concentrate on pacifying excess Vata in the body. Ashwagandha has the property of balancing Vata dosha and is good at dealing with anxiety.

Note:

4.  Ashwagandha for Diabetes mellitus

Ashwagandha can control blood sugar by increasing insulin production and improving insulin sensitivity in diabetic patients. Studies show that horseradish cells are less resistant to insulin. This improves insulin sensitivity and increases the use of glucose by cells. Ashwagandha protects insulin-producing cells and increases their number which in turn increases insulin secretion. Taken together, it helps manage the risk of diabetes.
Note:

  1. In a pan, take 1 glass of milk and 1/2 glass of water and bring to boil.
  2. Add 1 / 4-1 / 2 teaspoon ashwagandha root powder and boil for another 5 minutes.
  3. Add crushed almonds and walnuts (about 2 tbsp) to the mixture.
  4. Drink this mixture to control blood sugar level.

5. Ashwagandha for Arthritis

Ashwagandha can reduce the pain associated with arthritis. It appears that horseradish roots and leaves contain withferrin A which inhibits the formation of pain mediators like prostaglandins. This reduces the pain and inflammation associated with joint pain.

Ashwagandha is useful for relieving joint pain. According to Ayurveda, arthritis is caused by an increase in air pollution and is called arthritis. This causes pain, swelling and joint movement. Ashwagandha powder has anti-flatulence properties and relieves pain and swelling symptoms like joint pain.
Note:

  1. Take 1 / 4-1 / 2 teaspoon ashwagandha root powder.
  2. Mix in 1 glass of milk.
  3. Drink this three times a day.
  4. Continue for at least 1-2 months for best results.

6.Ashwagandha for Hypertension

Ashwagandha can improve a person’s ability to cope with stress-related problems such as stress and high blood pressure. Stress increases the secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) which increases the level of cortisol (stress hormone) in the body. Ashwagandha powder lowers cortisol levels and helps reduce its related problems like stress and high blood pressure.
Note:

  1. Take 1 / 4-1 / 2 teaspoon ashwagandha root powder in a cup of water.
  2. Boil the mixture in a pan for at least 10 minutes.
  3. Add a few drops of lemon and 1 teaspoon of honey to enhance the taste.
  4. Drink this mixture once a day in the morning.

7. Ashwagandha for Parkinson’s disease

Ashwagandha can be useful in Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease is caused by damage to nerve cells that affect movement, muscle control, and body balance. Ashwagandha prevents nerve damage due to its antioxidant properties. This reduces the risk of Parkinson’s and its related problems.

Ashwagandha helps control the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Vepathu, a disease described in Ayurveda, may be linked to Parkinson’s disease. This is due to the distorted air. Taking ashwagandha powder keeps the air balanced and helps reduce the loss of cells that control the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
